Athletic Creed
Senator Athletics Creed
The Athletics Department and Davis & Elkins community are dedicated to personal and academic excellence. Choosing to join the Senator family obligates you to a code of civilized and exemplary behavior.
This understanding accepts the premise that membership in the D&E athletics family is not without obligations, and that joining is evidence of commitment to certain ideals and an agreement to strive for the highest level of achievement and values, as outlined by the following:
I WILL PRACTICE PERSONAL AND ACADEMIC INTEGRITY.
A person committed to this ideal will not cheat in class, in games,
or in sports, and will eliminate any practice of plagiarism, lying,
deceit, excuse making, or disloyalty to coaches or teammates.
I WILL RESPECT THE DIGNITY OF ALL PERSONS.
A person committed to this ideal will not exhibit behavior that
compromises or demeans the dignity of an individual or group, such
as intimidation, taunting, teasing, baiting, ridicule, insults,
physical violence, harassment, or discrimination of any type.
I WILL RESPECT THE RIGHTS AND PROPERTY OF OTHERS.
A person committed to this ideal will not vandalize, maliciously
damage, destroy or take others personal property. Respect for
another person's rights is not consistent with behavior that
violates another's right to appropriate expression or to
privacy.
I WILL DISCOURAGE BIGOTRY AND STRIVE TO LEARN FROM THE
DIFFERENCES IN PEOPLE AND THEIR IDEAS AND OPINIONS.
A person committed to this ideal pledges support for equal rights
and opportunities for all students and athletes, regardless of age,
sex, race, religion, disability, ethnic heritage, socio-economic
status, political, social, or other affiliation, disaffiliation, or
personal preference.
I COMMIT TO DEMONSTRATING CONCERN FOR OTHERS, THEIR FEELINGS,
AND THEIR NEED FOR CONDITIONS WHICH SUPPORT THEIR EFFORTS AND
DEVELOPMENT.
Adherence to this ideal is a pledge for compassion and
consideration for others, a pledge to avoid behavior that is
insensitive, inhospitable or which unjustly inhibits another
person's ability to feel safe or welcome in the pursuit of
athletics or academic goals.
Adherence to these ideals will enable each student athlete to refrain from and to discourage behavior that threatens the freedom and respect all D&E community members deserve.
As a student athlete, you are reminded that you are not only obliged to avoid offensive behavior but should confront, challenge, respond to, or report wrong behavior whenever or wherever it is encountered.
